What's Brad like?   
He's smart, sweet and very funny! 
He's ambitious and hardworking, but sometimes he is a bit stubborn.

WHAT does he look like 
He is tall, muscular, and has black hair and green eyes.

WHO does he look like?
 He looks like his dad. 

Describe your best friend.
"Well, he is tall and muscular because he is a swimmer.  He has short, blond, wavy hair, blue eyes and a snub nose. His ears are small and round like a monkey's. He looks like his mother.  He is very friendly. He loves meeting new people and is talkative. He studies a lot, but he doesn't get good grades. I like spending time with him because he is a good listener and we enjoy doing the same things."

VOCABULARY - physical descriptions

 Face:  oval - long - round - square - heart-shaped - diamond-shaped 

She has a round face.   /    Her face is round. 
Her face is heart-shaped. / Her face is shaped like a heart.

 Chin:  square - pointed - double - strong - dimpled  
He has a square chin. 
He has a dimple on his chin. 

 Ears:  big - small - long - round - pointy/pointed (like an elf) - floppy - monkey ears - elephant ears - ears like Dumbo - attached lobe 
He has ears like a monkey.

 Noses:  long - short- straight - crooked - curved - fleshy - like a clown - like a pig - snotty - huge - upturned - ski jump 
Roman = straight with a bump, hump or dent on the bridge of the nose
Greek = long and straight
aquiline - hawk nose - hook nose
snub = short, wide at the nostrils
Nubian = long, wide at the end

My grandfather's nose is long and crooked. 

 Eyes:  big - small - wide set - close set - narrow - open - bug eyes (bulging, protruding) - deep set - slanting upward/downward - cat eyes (eyes like a cat) - like almonds - to have bags under your eyes - to have dark circles under your eyes - to wear/have glasses
blue - green - hazel - brown

You have a black eye if someone hits you and you have a bruise. 
She has beautiful, big, brown eyes.
His eyes are narrow and slant downward. 

She looks tired. She has dark circles and bags under her eyes! 

Eyebrows:  thick, thin, medium, straight, curved, bushy, caterpillar (connected, looks like one eyebrow)

 Mouth:  big - small - wide, like a frog, like Joker
 Lips:  thick - thin - full - thin upper/lower lip
 Teeth:  straight - crooked - buck (protruding) - a gold tooth - to wear braces
Mary has a small mouth with thin lips . Her teeth aren't straight, so she wears braces. 

 Hair:  short - long - medium length - shoulder length - straight - wavy - curly - bald - balding (going bald)
blonde (females) - blond (males, everyone) - strawberry blond- black - brown - red - ginger - carrot top 
She is a brunette / redhead / blonde.
She has brown hair /red hair / blonde hair / black hair. 

She has long, straight, blonde hair. (Length + style + color + hair). 

A blackhead is not for your hair, but on your face, like a pimple. 

Hairstyles: ponytail - pigtails - braids - French braid - bun - bangs - spiked hair 

His hair is shorter on the sides and longer on the top.  

Other things you can find on your face and body:

What people are like:

NOTE
Adjectives are generally used in this order and are separated by commas:


  1. Quantity (number) 
  2. Quality (opinion)
  3. Size
  4. Age
  5. Shape
  6. Color
  7. Origin (often nationality) 
  8. Material
  9. Purpose

Here is an example using all 9 types: 

Yesterday we bought six, wonderful, largeold, roundbrownFrenchwoodenkitchen chairs at an antique store in Florence.     

**We don't usually use more than 3 adjectives at a time.
These sentences are more common: 
  • I live in a very large, three-story house. 
  • The Italian flag is green, white, and red.

TRY THESE:
1) Describe a classmate. Do NOT say who it is.  Describe the person physically. Choose three words to describe his or her personality. One of the words should be negative.  
She's tall and slim with long legs. 
She has shoulder-length, curly, black hair, brown eyes, and sometimes wears glasses.  
She has a round face,  freckles, and a little scar above her lip. 
Her teeth are straight because she wore braces. Her nose is small and round. 

What is this person like in class? 
She's friendly, polite, very smart, but she's a bit talkative. 

3) Describe someone in your family. Give a good physical description and choose at least 3 words to describe his or her personality. You know this person well. 
Do you look like this person? 

4) DRAW a "person". You will describe this "person" and someone will draw it. See artwork below.

Funny drawing. I don't understand the part around the mouth. What are the gold colored lines and the pink near his mouth? Is that a square tongue?
